Food, fun, events and studios, these are our favourite things in the UAE right now…
Outrageously good truffle pizza at… The Artisan
Pizza – even great pizza – is subjective. You may like a certain pizza more than another, but I don’t think you’ll find fault with the taste of the tartufo nero (Dhs210) at The Artisan. Shaved truffle from Piemonte and 72-hour fermented dough are key players to this indulgent dish, with a crisp-meets-moreish dough that cradles an ooey gooey lava of the good stuff. It’s a masterpiece in Italian cuisine, and the finest example of elegant pizza done right. – Laura Coughlin, Head of Content
Good travel vibes at… Matcha
Padel centres and yoga studios may be a dime a dozen in Dubai these days, but Matcha combined both offerings into one stunning wellbeing spot. Located about two blocks away from Alserkal Avenue, Matcha has all the design elements of a chic Californian hideaway, where tree-lined pathways lead you past padel courts painted in burnt orange and on towards two crisp white wellness studios. The studios host a jam-packed schedule of yoga and movement classes hosted by the city’s top teachers. Yoga classes start at Dhs95 for an introductory class (or Dhs115 per class), while padel courts cost Dhs250 for a one-hour booking. It’s also home to the very beautiful Nette café that serves up its own selection ace dishes particularly for breakfast. –Laura Coughlin, Head of Content
Being wowed by dinner and a show at… Papillon
I missed the first season of Layla Kardan’s daring dinner and a show concept, Papillon, so I was determined to make it now the creative team are back making magic for season two. A sultry supper club that brings burlesque vibes to The Westin Mina Seyahi, their new Wednesday evening brunch is a great value Dhs395, with three hours of drinks (including cocktails), a three course menu, and half-hourly shows from 9pm to 11pm. Each one sees a mini story unfold with drama, intrigue and expert choreography to leave you dazzled. – Alice Holtham, Group Digital Editor
Updating my holiday wardrobe with… Chic Le Frique
Once I like something wardrobe-wise, I have a tendency to snap it up in every colour. What can I say, I’m a creature of habit. Most recently, that’s made me the proud owner of a rainbow-coloured collection of linen sets from Dubai-based online store, Chic Le Frique. They do tailored two pieces in every colour imaginable, with shorts paired with an array of oversized shirts, tie-front jackets and crop tops. That’s my summer wardrobe sorted. – Alice Holtham, Group Digital Editor
Decadent dining at… Ossiano
Like most expats, Ossiano has been on my bucket list since I moved to Dubai. Dinner at Atlantis’ famed underwater restaurant comes with a pretty price tag, but for good reason. Chef Gregoire’s nine-course menu is unlike any other, taking inspiration from his childhood in Brittany and conveying stories on the plate through creative cooking. The service is no less than impeccable – warm, friendly, and insightful without being stuffy or pretentious. The night turned out to be full of surprises, with unexpected experiences from start to finish. Definitely worth the wait! – Elise Kerr, Deputy Editor
Peaceful shopping trips to… Dubai Hills Mall
I finally got around to checking out the new(ish) Dubai Hills Mall, and it’s now by go-to as the only mall I don’t need to arrive at the crack of 10am to get my shopping done in peace. With so many great stores to choose from, I could honestly spend hours in there and with Roxy Cinemas on its way very soon I have yet another reason to go. – Elise Kerr, Deputy Editor
Flying the local colours with… Emirates
It’s easy to get blasé about just how good Dubai’s emblematic airline is, but the juxtaposition of a short trip with a budget carrier, or pretty much any other airline will reaffirm that for you in your mind. That’s what happened to me recently on a trip back to the UK for a friend’s wedding. After flying with a low-cost outfit (who shall remain nameless, at least partially because they’d probably charge 15 Euros for the convenience) – I fell in love with Emirates all over again. The crew, the ICE entertainment system, the super modern aircraft, the fact I didn’t have to pay 30 GBP for a luke warm panini. Emirates — I solemnly swear that I’ll never get tired of checking in and checking you out. – Miles Buckeridge, Senior Online Reporter
Practicing those bars for a night of… Hip Hop karaoke
I discovered this week that there’s a hip hop and R&B karaoke night in Abu Dhabi, and as a life-long appreciator of the game — I’m feeling those 8 Mile “if you had one chance” vibes right now. It goes down every Thursday, at Atlon Bar in The Souk Qaryat Al Beri — letting you issue open invitations to ride on a Genuwine ‘Pony’; join Mary’s campaign against hateration and holleration in local danceries; or investigate if indeed the people truly have Forgot about Dre. Will my money jiggle jiggle? Will I capture this opportunity? Or just let it slip? Stay tuned in to find out…– Miles Buckeridge, Senior Online Reporter
Brunching at… La Mezcaleria JBR
La Mezcaleria opened its second venue in JBR Pavilion and is spreading its Mexican-inspired magic across the city for you lucky señors and señoritas. We booked a table that looked out onto the double-tap-worthy views of Ain Dubai. You’ll be sitting comfortably for four hours, as there are no school dinner-like queues, just terrific table service. Dig into Mexican marvels including salmon tacos, chicken quesadillas and cheese quesadillas. I loved the fun, relaxed atmosphere, thanks to the jungle chic interior with bright green walls and brighter green plants. The atmosphere (and volume) gets turned up a notch, as dining is followed by dancing. Come for the Mexican food, stay for the good vibes. – Kohinoor Sahota, Online Reporter
Catching up with friends at… February 30’s new ladies’ night
Palm West Beach boasts so many new beach clubs, but for me there’s one that’s making a splash. The mark of a great place is whether or not you return, and I loved coming back for seconds in February 30, especially after it launched a new ladies’ night. On Tuesday nights, women can sip on free-flowing drinks across wine, spirits and cocktails and a set food menu (Dhs199) – created by Chef Reif Othman, no less. After a drink (or three), you’re reminded just how impressive Dubai can be: beach, booze and blockbuster views. Cheers to that. – Kohinoor Sahota, Online Reporter
Ordering in vegetarian food from the newly launched app… Yalla Veggie
On certain days during the week, my dad is a pure vegetarian and if we need to order in food on one of those days, it can be quite challenging and the battle of “Where do you want to eat?” always takes place. So when the Yalla Veggie app launched in Dubai recently championing the vegetarian and vegan restaurants in the city I knew it would be helpful. Besides vegetarian and vegan food from restaurants and bakeries, you can also shop for items at supermarkets, purchase food for pet, and even supplements.– Aarti Saundalkar, Online Reporter
Upping my screen time with some interesting documentaries on… Disney+
Fine and some Disney princess movies, too… After being teleported back to my childhood at the Disney+ official launch at Dubai Opera, I immediately signed up for the one-month subscription (Dhs29.99). There’s plenty of content from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and Star to add to your ‘Watchlist’. I’ve already got my list ready for the weekend and it includes a documentary, the Marvel flick Moon Knight and maybe if I have time –an animated film from Walt Disney Animation Studios. – Aarti Saundalkar, Online Reporter
