Meta announced it is laying off 11,000 employees and the Dubai office will be affected.
META is the parent company of the world’s most popular communication tools including Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, and the announcement about the international layoff was confirmed by Meta’s synonymous CEO Mark Zuckerburg
Meta confirmed 13% of its workforce would lose their jobs in one of the biggest tech layoffs this year, and the biggest in Meta’s 18-year history according to Reuters. The terminations are being attributed to soaring costs, a loss in ad revenue, and “a big mistake in planning”.
Fares Akkad, Meta Mena’s regional director has now confirmed that the Dubai office is affected, via a post on LinkedIn
“The MENA team was impacted as well” The number of employees laid off in the Dubai office has not been shared.
“The team members that are leaving us are some of the most talented, capable and kind people that I have had the pleasure to work with”
Yesterday was one of the hardest days of my professional career. We had to let go of 11K people globally and unfortunately the MENA team was impacted as well. These departures are purely due to needed restructures to face some of the challenging macro economic conditions. The team members that are leaving us are some of the most talented, capable and kind people that I have had the pleasure to work with. They would be an incredible asset to any organization. If you have any openings please share them with me and I am happy to personally refer any of these great people.
The people who lost their jobs will be paid 16 weeks of base pay plus two additional weeks for every year of service
They will also get the cost of healthcare for six additional months, according to reports. The news follows fellow social media platform Twitter, which also cut thousands of jobs internationally. The swift, cost-saving measures were enforced by Elon Musk, Twitter’s new owner and one of the world’s richest men.
Mark Zuckerburg stated low revenue was the reason for the mass termination
Not only has online commerce returned to prior trends, but the macroeconomic downturn, increased competition, and ads signal loss have caused our revenue to be much lower than I’d expected.
Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg said in a message to employees.
