Feeling very satisfied with the spicy chicken strips from… BonBird
I missed trying the food at BonBird when my team went to check it out in April (see video above). And when they came back with some raving reviews, it instantly popped on my ‘Must-try’ restaurant list. I finally got to try it when Team What’s On received a special delivery from the fried chicken joint. We loved the mac and cheese, the gravy, beans and the chicken tenders were oh-so-good! I preferred the strips with a little less spice, but they still packed plenty of flavours. I’ve already told my mates about it and we are currently sorting out plans to visit the restaurant. – Aarti Saundalkar, Online Reporter
Getting my caffeine morning pick-me-up more often thanks to the… Cofe app
I try to limit myself to one coffee from Caribou a week. Not for health reasons as such, but to save my bank account. I’ve been using the Cofe app for just a few months, but I have already racked up points (beans) and upped myself to the gold tier. This means that I can now get a cool 7.5 per cent discount on my coffee, plus a free meal and two free drinks. Taste testing the world’s third-best burger at… Eleven Green
In the cut-throat world of burger joints in Dubai, there’s a new kid on the block. Say hello to the homegrown burger bistro concept Eleven Green. Eleven Green is the brainchild of Sultan and Kinda Chatila, the humble husband-and-wife duo that is taking the local foodie scene by storm with sell-out supper club Tano’s at 8, paella pop-ups, and their award-winning Bull Burger. The latter is how this supper club turned into a permanent restaurant and homegrown success story. The menu may be minimalist – with just four choices of beef burgers freshly prepared daily – but from the very first bite, these burgers are in another league. Just try to leave room for the fudge-a-la-mode dessert. This is a burger worth the wait. – Tamara Wright, Online Reporter
Being one of the first to try the omakase taco dinner with… Panamericana
Hiding in homegrown gem and fermentation house, Tabchilli, we recently experienced an authentic taco omakase by the four Mexican chef’s behind the foodie-favourite pop-up, Panamericana. This elbow-to-elbow dining experience is a must-try with interesting ‘deconstructed’ tacos we’ve never seen before, served across 10 courses. Highlights included the pupusa, tuna tostado, the pastor-style chicken, not to mention the scrumptious churros. With only ten seats, it’s no surprise the next two dinners are sold out. You can book for either June 21 and 28, and we recommend you do. – Tamara Wright, Online Reporter
Making sure that every little bit that we do helps with… Wishful Skin
This week we were invited to the launch of Wishful Skin’s Get Clean cleanser. Typically, when a beauty or skincare product is launched there is a party or some sort of celebration, sending the creation off into the world. This time however Huda and Mona Kattan decided to do things a little differently. In celebration of World Ocean Day, we all headed down to Secret Beach and with the help of Goumbook we were able to collect nasty cigarette butts and rubbish that was left at the beach. Beach, get clean – which we successfully did. Side note, if you’re ever curious about the Wishful products, as a skincare enthusiast with acne-prone, combination skin: I can’t recommend the Yo Glow Enzyme Scrub enough. – Shelby Gee, Junior Reporter
Checking out the opening of the Driven by Change exhibition at… Studio Thirteen
If you know absolutely anything about me at all, you’ll know that I’m an F1 girlie and proud. This is why I was super excited to receive my invitation to the opening of the Driven by Change residency at Studio Thirteen. A special initiative led by McLaren and Vuse to help underrepresented artists find their voice and gain the exposure they deserve. Hearing Zak Brown announce the opening of the residency space, at the art home of Alum, Rabab Tantawy’s Studio Thirteen in Al Quoz, was something I never thought I’d be privileged enough to hear first-hand. – Shelby Gee, Junior Reporter
Indulging in a burger after a really long time from… Pickl (thanks to Noon)
Confession: I’m not a massive fan of burgers. I’m sort of indifferent to them (basic of me, I know). And until yesterday I hadn’t even tried a fried chicken burger, but Noon Food graciously sent the What’s On team an offer code (Thanks noonuae!) to enjoy some of Pickl’s sandos. I tried their chicken sando in the heat level Feel the Heat – it was crispy and the spice hit all the right places. If you’re a spicy food lover like me, then this might tickle your taste buds. Excited to check out the Six Degrees Exit Show at… Dubai Design District
Who’s not excited when the weekend (finally) rolls around? This Friday I’m looking forward to visiting American University Sharjah’s (AUS) College of Art & Architecture’s (CAAD) student film showcase, Six Degrees at Dubai Design District (D3) to cheer on a close friend. This is particularly a shout-out to her for all the hard work and persistence that went into making a wonderful film; I couldn’t be prouder. It is free to enter for all, and you can expect to see wonderful student projects, complete with an awards ceremony for aspiring graduates. Glamming up with… Peripera’s Ink Airy Velvet Lip Tint
I love a red lip. It’s classic, it’s powerful and it takes attention away from my subpar skills in the rest of the makeup departments (foundation and I do not get along). While a rich, velvety red is always a knockout of the park, I’ve recently been obsessed with Korean beauty brand Peripera’s Ink Airy Velvet Lip Tint. Lip stains and tints are all the rage right about now, and combined with the recent renaissance of Korean beauty and skincare, consider myself heavily influenced. I picked up the shade Hotspot Red at Watson’s and the finish of the product is just perfect. Light, powdery and just the right pop of colour. Oh, and the packaging is absolutely adorable. Hitting the pause button on the Dubai Metro and reading… Sputnik Sweetheart by Haruki Murakami
If you’re a fellow user of Dubai’s public transport network, I think I can safely assume that you and I share rush hour trauma. You’ll probably be halfway to Abu Dhabi on wheels in the time it takes me to get home in the same city, but such is life. Reading is my escape, on and off the train, and Sputnik Sweetheart by Haruki Murakami has kept me transported (pun most definitely intended) during my commutes this week. Murakami’s microscopic lens on the real emotions of real people has me all in and it’s a love story by all means but it still broke my heart. – Manaal Fatimah, Editorial Intern
