These are our favourite things in the UAE right now…
Returning to an old favourite with dinner at… Coya Dubai
Coya sits confidently in a small group of elite Dubai restaurants that have not only stood the test of time on the city’s burgeoning dining scene, but have also remained at the top of their game. It had been a while since I’d visited, so when a friend suggested dinner here recently, I jumped at the opportunity to return. I can confirm that it’s still got that tri-factor of beautiful interiors that you just want to touch, really well executed Peruvian dishes, and some of the best service in town. – Alice Holtham, Group Editor
Upgrading my home with the help of… Reno King
Earlier this summer, I ambitiously took on a home renovation project, turning my slightly tired apartment in The Greens into a modern abode. Ensuring the process was as hassle-free as possible have been Reno King, tasked with managing the transformation of the bathroom, flooring and living areas. From the new plumbing and electrical works, to making subtle aesthetic enhancements that make it feel contemporary and bright, they’ve pulled off some excellent work. – Alice Holtham, Group Editor
Revelling in retro sweet revery with… Candylicious
This week a gigantic box of candy was delivered to the office. Which in itself is not unusual, the What’s On team is abnormally sweet-toothed and sugar is our main currency for bribes. But what made this consignment particularly interesting, is the memories ethereally attached to it. It was a showcase of Candylicious’ current retro sweet celebration, featuring candy that first appeared in the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s (available until the end of September). Ever wondered what a Tootsie Roll tastes like (not America’s finest culinary achievement, but there is a certain charm), hankering for a nostalgic hit of sherbet DibDab (@Alice)? Or just keen for a dose of tuck shop flashbacks handed out by fizzy Refreshers? Candylicious (Dubai Mall) is giving out all the retro Willy Wonka feels, with none of the work place accidents. – Miles Buckeridge, Deputy Editor, What’s On Dubai
Living out my James Bond fantasies with the rental of an… Aston Martin
As part of a currently under wraps feature for What’s On, I picked up the keys to an Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante today. And I’m going to confess something that is likely to make some people angry. I’m not knowledgeable enough about cars to appreciate the experience in the way most petrol heads would want. I don’t know what torque is or why it’s important and although I know the fact it comes with a V12 engine delivering 715BHP is a good thing but only because of the noises both it and I make when I’m driving it on the E11. The reason I have fallen in love with this car, is altogether more intangible than specifications and aesthetic rizz. When I’m sat in that driving capsule, I’m Bond… a peroxide, licensed to spill red wine down my cream trousers, probably gonna ask if can pet that fluffy cat you’re stroking Blofeld, James Bond. – Miles Buckeridge, Deputy Editor, What’s On Dubai
Crossing my T’s with…Matcha Green Tea Mousse
If you’re a matcha fan (how are you not?), this one is a must try. I’ve often finished a cup of matcha green tea and wished it were bottomless, so the mousse at Stills at Yas Island’s Crowne Plaza works beautifully since it’s rich, creamy and will linger on your palate, taking you a good while to finish. Order some for Dhs40 – Dinesh Ramanathan, Deputy Editor, What’s On Abu Dhabi
Staying cool with….Ray Ban’s Original Wayfarer Classic
You’ve seen it a million times. No matter, it’s still cooler than cool. Available in colours aplenty including blue lenses and tortoise-shell frames, the green lenses on polished black are the OG variant and have been featured in adverts and movies for over fifty years, becoming a hallmark of men’s fashion. Since Bausch + Lomb dropped this design at the mid-way mark of the twentieth century, pretty much every icon of cool has been spotted in them including Tom Cruise, Michael Jackson and Bruce Willis. I’m personally a fan because of their wider, heavier frames that are relatively stronger and can roll with rough handling. Goofballs, take note. – Dinesh Ramanathan, Deputy Editor, What’s On Abu Dhabi
Telling everyone about Jumeirah’s Al Qasr new Indian restaurant… Atrangi by Ritu Dalmia
I started the week out dining at Atrangi by Ritu Dalmia, and oh wow was I pleasantly surprised. Dishes from various regions and communities in India dot the fine-dining menu and diners are let feeling warm and nostalgic from the home-style flavours used. Besides the food, my favourite bits from the restaurant include the photos of cool grandmas that dot the venue, the view at sundown and the tiny details in the design that remind me of home.– Aarti Saundalkar, Online Reporter
Catching up with colleagues in the capital at… Lock Stock & Barrel
Last weekend I was in the capital with a couple of colleagues and we ended the day having a few sips at Lock Stock & Barrel on Yas Bay. Now, I’ve been to the branches out in Dubai which is well-known for its loud music and upbeat party vibes, but at LSB Abu Dhabi, it has a bit more of a chill (read, not eardrum blasting) vibe, which is exactly what we were looking for after a long day out. We arrived during happy hour and enjoyed some great sips and music but were still able to chit-chat without screaming over the table at each other. Would highly recommend. – Aarti Saundalkar, Online Reporter
Making sure I keep my body moving with… yoga and running
I have never been a fitness babe, nor have I ever claimed to be. But something that I do always try to do is keep my body moving, hold myself accountable and make sure I do my best. Because let’s be honest, sometimes it’s easier to sit on the couch, munch on snacks and do nothing, but that is not sustainable long term (sadly). I’ve only recently started getting back into my yoga routine again and going for regular (ish) jogs, but I can honestly say I’m already starting to feel better. So, if you were looking for that sign, this is it. Go for a walk, get yourself moving, and show up for yourself, because nobody else is going to do it for you. – Shelby Gee, Junior Reporter
Checking out the swankiest new cocktail bar… Agora
I love a good cocktail, there is nothing better than sipping on liquid gold that was created by a mixologist that very obviously and clearly takes pride in their trade. Newly opened in The Dubai Edition, Agora is a cocktail bar that exemplifies this. Each cocktail that I tasted ignited sparkly eyes and happiness within me. All I keep telling people is how desperately they need to check out Agora because – one word, wow. – Shelby Gee, Junior Reporter
Giving my body a break with… soup
The nature of my employment is such that I’m constantly within the vicinity of rich, hearty, heavy and simply delicious food of all kinds. Obviously, if good food is in the ‘hood, you best believe I’m there, so yours truly has just been eating her way through life these past few weeks. My heart continues to echo a resounding yes but my body? Not so much, and I figured it’s time to give my poor organs working on overtime a break. Enter: soup from Freshii. Warm, comforting and the next best thing after perfect winged eyeliner, it’s delivering a vegetable or two, and ingredients I can actually pronounce, to my system. – Manaal Fatimah, Editorial Intern
Understanding what all the hype about Steven Yeun is with…Beef
I’m probably about light years late to the party, but I’ve officially boarded the Steven Yeun appreciation train. His latest television release, Beef, was my viewing of choice this week, and let’s just say I’ve never been more entertained by people being just absolutely despicable. What begins as a run-in between two drivers in the parking lot of a department store snowballs into a feud of hilariously destructive proportions. Yeun’s Danny and Ali Wong’s Amy are as nasty as they come but in a broccoli-in-your-teeth sort of way. You can’t stop watching. – Manaal Fatimah, Editorial Intern
Watch it on @netflixmena
Exploring a pink world with… Barbie
After hearing and seeing positive, negative and average reviews about the Barbie movie over the week since its release, I got to watch the film last night with some girlfriends. We really enjoyed the cinematography, costume design and of course not to forget the performances by Margot Robbie (the perfect stereotypical Barbie), Ryan Gosling’s funky presentation of Ken. While the film took a light-hearted jab on many issues, I related so much to Barbie when she said that she doesn’t like the real world (take me back with you to Barbieland please).– Mabel Elizabeth, Editorial Intern
Trying Argentinian cuisine at… Sucre
This week, I had the chance to visit Sucre in DIFC for dinner. The restaurant’s brick walled interiors and elegant furniture caught my attention right away and the food and service were equally lovely. I recommend trying the fresh beetroot salad with creamy tahini and the mushroom truffle pasta. My favourite part of any meal, without saying, is dessert- and it was a perfect end to the night sharing their dulce de leche fondant with fried pecans and vanilla and dark chocolate olive oil mousse. Special shout out to the warm focaccia bread and stuffed olives we were served at the start- drool worthy appetisers. – Mabel Elizabeth, Editorial Intern
