These are our favourite things in the UAE right now…
Celebrating the day of love… CE LA VI
I try not to be too cliche when it comes to Valentine’s Day, but this year my fiance and I booked dinner at one of our favourite restaurants, CE LA VI, which was all dressed up for the occasion with twinkling candlelight. The a la carte menu of pan-Asian dishes always hits the high notes, and we even came away with a beautiful illustration, which I’ll treasure forever. –Alice Holtham, Group Editor
Checking out Dubai’s breathtaking new address… The Lana
A string of stunning new hotels have opened recently in the UAE, but the one I’ve been most excited for, is The Lana, the Middle Eastern debut of the Dorchester Collection. A lesson in soft luxury, this Business Bay address is a true show-stopper, with its molecular attention to detail, stunning rooftop pool, and breathtaking contemporary design. Sundowners at High Society are a must for all Dubai skyline lovers. Read my full review here. – Alice Holtham, Group Editor
Being blown away by the immersive experience at… Arte Museum
If there is something new in the town on the art and culture front, you can guarantee that I will be there. This week, What’s On had a sneak peek at a few of the rooms at the immersive art museum ahead of its opening on February 20 at the Dubai Mall. Arte Museum, which is already renowned around the world is by the masterminds at world-class digital media design company d’strict and they have come up with a magical multi-sensory experience here in Dubai. And all I can say is ‘wow…’. It’s multisensory, which means beyond being surrounded by digital art, expect sound and fragrance to envelope you. I already can’t wait to return to see it all. – Aarti Saundalkar, Online Reporter
Swapping out my chocolate dessert for this sweet treat from… LDC Kitchen + Coffee
When I think of a trifle, the first thing that comes to mind is ‘…beef sauteed with peas and onions, more custard, bananas and whipped cream’ (Thanks, Friends). But of course, the trifle at LDC Kitchen + Coffee is nothing like this insane concoction, courtesy Rachel. Instead, Chef Nadia Parekh’s berry lemon treat is a five-layer slice of heaven which blends zesty lemon, curd, sweet berries, mascarpone mousse, caramelized white chocolate crumble and torched meringue. I am usually more of a chocolate dessert fan, but this dessert is now easily a favourite. All I can say is, ‘I like it! Berries, good! Lemon, good! Mousse, gooood!’ – Aarti Saundalkar, Online Reporter
Tucking into delicious food from local heroes at… Le Guépard
Chic French brasserie Le Guépard in Alserkal Avenue holds a special place in my heart. Not only does it serve delicious food in a unique Alice in Wonderland-inspired setting, but the female-owned spot also champions local culinary talent. Through its regular supper clubs and foodie pop-ups, Le Guépard continuously supports homegrown chefs and restaurants. This weekend, the spotlight is on Italian eatery Monno, as part of Le Guépard’s Café 10 sessions—a monthly event where a different homegrown concept takes center stage. From 12pm to 7pm until Sunday, don’t miss Chef Frederico’s authentic Napoli dishes. Must orders include the truffle bomb and the polpetta to start, followed by the moreish duck casoncelli pasta and the melt-in-the-mouth Wagyu salami pizza. Chef Frederico’s passion for Italian flavours keeps the stomach full and the heart even fuller. – Tamara Wright, Online Reporter
Spending Valentine’s Day like a true What’s On wifey at… LPM Dubai
@whatsondubaiHeading out for drinks this weekend? Well-known for his social media personas Constance and Cousin Colton, Gstaad Guy unveils his latest creation, the fantastique Palais Constance rosé wine, now available exclusively at LPM Dubai🍷❤️♬ original sound – What’s On Dubai
If by now you haven’t seen any of Gstaad Guy’s hilarious parody videos: à la poubelle. For those already in the know, imagine our excitement when Alice and I discovered that Gstaad Guy would be debuting his latest creation, Palais Constance rosé wine, at none other than LPM Dubai. We arrive at the launch event unsure whether we’ll be meeting Constance, Cousin Colton, or in fact, the legendary social media comedian himself. The latter was true, and it couldn’t have been any more fantastique. From now until March 8, guests can enjoy a three-course set menu featuring Gstaad Guy’s personal faves at LPM including warm prawns with olive oil, snails with garlic butter, homemade gnocchi, and French toast with spice ice cream. The menu is priced at Dhs410 and includes a welcome Palais Constance cocktail (try the naughty sgroppino). If she’s wifey fo sho stay a bit longer and get three glasses of Palais Constance for Dhs150. The beautiful dry rosé transports you to the South of France with every sip. – Tamara Wright, Online Reporter
Celebrating Valentine’s Day in a very impromptu way at… One Life
Let me start this by saying: It’s not that I hate Valentine’s Day for any sort of “anti-love” reason. I just find celebrating the day pointless – if my partner is going to treat me to something special it should be because they want to, not because a holiday (that is an excuse for money-making) has forced them to. At any other time of the year, I love receiving flowers (who doesn’t) but on Valentine’s Day, I physically cringe at the idea that someone has gone out of their way to buy me any romantic gift because a Roman saint was celebrated with a feast back in the 8th Century. I love love and I think we should celebrate love more on the daily, not just on V-Day. Anyways, Forgetting the day altogether, my man and I ended up enjoying an impromptu dinner at our favourite spot, One Life, and thankfully the cosy and chilled restaurant didn’t have any candle-lit table decorations, or rose petals scattered around. It was just us, at our favourite spot like it was any normal day. While I’m normally a kale and cranberry salad kind of gal at One Life, the waiter suggested I try the Killer Prawn sandwich, but in a wrap, and I think I found my new go-to. – Shelby Gee, Junior Reporter
Popcorn and actions thanks to… Jason Statham and Denzel Washington
One thing you can always guarantee is that any Jason Statham or Denzel Washington film will be consistently good – and not in the meta, use your brain to understand the nuances kind of good, just an all-around solid film that serves its purpose for easy and entertaining watching. This week the two films that made me feel like I just watched a solid film were The Beekeeper (starring Jason Statham) and of course, finally watching The Equalizer 3 (a Denzel Washington classic.) Growing up I remember watching and rewatching films like The Equalizer with my dad thinking I could be just like Robert McCall – in another life maybe. If you’re looking for an easy but solid watch this weekend cuddled up with some popcorn, I recommend either of these films. – Shelby Gee, Junior Reporter
Celebrating a sweet Galentine’s evening at… Salt Camp
This week, February 14 rolled around, and of course, I had to honour age-old traditions by taking my girlfriends out for some Galentime. To do something a little different from the usual sit-down dinners, we went to check out the Salt Camp pop-up at the Museum of the Future. This edition will transport you to the streets of Japan, where fragrant smoke swirls around as meats sizzle on grills and paper lanterns light up the chilly night. Winding tunnels, understated signage, traditional motifs and of course, the tiki tents give this space the perfect moonlit, streetside vibes. The food was spectacular, with Japanese elements made to elevate – we loved it, especially with a side of conversation about horrible bosses, Hinge date fails and loving life. You will too. – Manaal Fatimah, Junior Reporter
Appreciating the unhinged with… Argylle
My latest in-cinema watch is Argylle, starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston and many more top-tier names. Think cheesy spy thriller-meets-Inception meets Strictly Come Dancing and you have this highly entertaining one-time watch. It comes from the Kingsman universe, so there is some iconic overlap, but it is entirely original for the most part and features a cat so cute, I almost wept. Go watch, and marvel at Henry Cavill’s perfectly columnal hair.– Manaal Fatimah, Junior Reporter
